Leigh Augustine

Assistant Head of Preschool

At Northside since 2009

Brooklyn College-M.S.Ed.- Early Childhood Special Education

My Primary Roles at Northside:

Assistant Head of Preschool

Director of Extended Learning

I serve as a support to the teaching staff as well as to the parents. In this capacity, I offer guidance with regard to curriculum development, Reggio Emilia pedagogy, best practice in early childhood education. I also lead the After School Program at the preschool, and direct extended learning across programs, including summer camp.

Since You Asked, Here’s What I’m Most Proud Of As An Educator:

The look that flashes across a child’s face the moment they first put the pieces together of a difficult concept is so rewarding. I am honored to have witnessed these moments, and proud to have played a role in achieving them.

Favorite Job Perk:

The ability to bring my children with me to a school whose principles and values I share so whole-heartedly with educators who I know and trust has been one of my life’s greatest joys. Being able to get up from my desk at (almost) any time and be able to play!

Between You And Me (Hardly Anyone Knows That):

I was a member of the Studio Singers when I was in high school. It was a glee club type of group and we all wore polyester tuxedos with red bow ties. It was legit. Once we were invited to sing back up during a Barry Manilow concert! It’s the absolute most nervous I have ever been.

What I Wanted To Be When I Grew Up (At Age 10):

An artist and a mom

What I Want To Be When I Grow Up (Now):

I would love to one day run a Reggio-inspired nursery school in a restored one-room schoolhouse in the country. This is my retirement plan.

When Not In The Classroom I Can Be Found:

Hanging out with my two little boys, Asa and Forrest. They are truly the lights of my life. Nothing is more fun for me than helping them develop their ideas and interests. Asa ALWAYS has a project in mind, and Forrest is just beginning to explore the world. Being a parent and an educator can be overwhelming at times, but I think it has allowed me a wonderful new perspective both on teaching and parenting. I learn so much from by kids everyday.

Favorite Place In The Neighborhood:

The rooftop at WNP

Favorite Place In The World:

Home, but Iceland and Vermont are pretty great, too.

I Am An Educator Because:

I believe strongly in the innate abilities of children. I see my role as an educator as an opportunity to help children to unlock their curiosities, learn how to ask their important questions and find their passions so that they may pursue a meaningful journey toward understanding.

Secret Dream Job:

SAHM; Artist/Designer

If I Weren’t In The Classroom, I’d Be:

Knitting and spending time outdoors.

Favorite Book:

Anne of Green Gables, The Frog and Toad series by Arnold Lobel; a true portrait of friendship, imo.

Favorite TV Show:

Stranger Things, The Handmaid’s Tale, PBS, but honestly, I don’t watch much TV these days.

Favorite Meal:

Anything with cheese, the stinkier the better!
