Greetings, Northside Families! I hope you had a wonderful summer, full of relaxation and exploration. For our first few blogs of the year, we’d like to introduce you to our new faculty members. Today we’re highlighting Sarah Shey, our Lower and Middle School Librarian.
We are thrilled to welcome Sarah Shey to Williamsburg Northside faculty! Sarah is a life-long learner, reader and writer with a passion for literature and education. She holds a BA in English Literature and International Studies from Northwestern University, an MFA in Nonfiction Writing from Columbia University and will complete her MS in Information Science from SUNY Albany this spring. She has also completed education coursework at Hunter College and taught at Brooklyn Friends, MLK Jr. High School, International School of Brooklyn, Cobble Hill High School and in Poland.
Sarah looks forward to working with our students and families to build our collection of books and making the library a space everyone loves to visit. As Sarah says, the library needs to be “a bountiful place of reading, wonder and learning.”
According to Barbara Stripling, Senior Associate Dean of Syracuse’s iSchool, the five pillars of a strong library program are:
- Access to resources and technology
- The library environment (physical and virtual)
- Collaborative partnerships (for teaching and learning throughout the school).
Sarah will also use the Empire State Information Fluency Continuum (IFC) to teach information fluency, inquiry, digital literacy and citizenship. Along with those components, as always, the WNS library program will be alive with literature with lots of read-alouds and time for students to wander among the stacks and find a comfy nook to enjoy their favorite read. A few of Sarah’s favorite books are Brown Girl Dreaming, Sula, A Confederacy of Dunces, Tales from Moominvalley and Noisy Nora.
And if you love reading as much as Sarah, consider volunteering! Sarah is looking for parents to help reshelve books, read aloud to students or contribute other special talents. Email Sarah at firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to get involved. She looks forward to meeting all of you at Back To School Night on Thursday, September 27th. Happy Reading!
