“Every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist when you grow up”

— Pablo Picasso

“I was born with music inside me. Music was one of my parts. Like my ribs, my kidneys, my
liver, my heart. Like my blood. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene.
It was a necessity for me-like food or water.”

— Ray Charles

Art experiences provide infants & toddlers with the ability to represent their thoughts, ideas, and emotions. Here at Northside, we believe in providing children with a variety of interesting and open-ended experiences and materials, including natural as well as recycled/found objects.

Children at Northside receive weekly art enrichment classes with our program’s atelierista (“studio teacher”). Infant and Toddler art materials build children’s creativity, independence, and confidence through hands-on exploration. When children present their ideas through a variety of different media, they form new questions, learn to elaborate on their ideas, and strengthen their ability to communicate with others.

At this young age classes focus on building upon childrens natural curiosity about their world. Experiences in paint, clay, collage, and drawing materials are offered. These early sensory encounters help children to make sense of their world, and to see the magic in everyday things. Such encounters might include:

  • Exploration of textures, including contrasting materials (smooth vs. bumpy, soft vs. rough, etc.)
  • Light explorations using light tables as well as transparent and everyday materials (from blocks to pine cones and beyond)

Music and Art

Music plays a powerful role in the lives of young children. Whether it is the seemingly simple act of falling asleep in a caregiver’s arms while listening to a lull-a-bye, discovering objects in nature that produce interesting sounds, or participating in a home-made instrument parade around the neighborhood, music plays a significant role in promoting a child’s growth across various developmental domains.

In addition to the numerous musical experiences that go on throughout the course of the typical school day, Williamsburg Northside’s Infant & Toddler Center also offers a music enrichment class, led by a special instructor, twice per week. The primary goals of these classes are to enhance your child’s curiosity about music and sounds in his or her environment, to develop vocal awareness, body awareness, spatial awareness, listening skills, and social interaction skills, all while engaged and entertained by music.
