Welcome to the Williamsburg Northside Infant & Toddler Center, affectionately known as the “ITC.” My name is Yolanda Uzzo and I have been the head of this wonderful program since its inception in 2009 as well as a member of the Northside teaching community for over 16 years. I am proud to have dedicated the majority of my career to serving the very Williamsburg neighborhood where I was born and raised, making the program uniquely special to me on both a professional as well as personal level. Prior to my role as ITC division head, I earned a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from St. John’s University and worked as a preschool teacher, librarian/literacy instructor, and early intervention teacher. I find daily joy in observing the various ways in which Williamsburg Northside’s students (a group which includes my son, Dante) investigate, derive meaning from, and discover the wonder of our world.
It is my privilege to be part of such a nurturing community filled with inquisitive children, loving families, and passionate teachers who work closely together to design an enriching curriculum. Our work extends beyond the basic expectations of childcare and daycare programs in Brooklyn and Williamsburg. We respect the significance of the infant & toddler years in addition to laying a strong foundation for children’s future learning experiences in preschool and beyond. This is accomplished through engaging project work and rich sensory experiences.
I believe that infants and toddlers are highly capable individuals who construct their knowledge through interactions with adults, peers, and the environment. Guided by this belief, I, along with the entire ITC teaching team, am committed to utilizing family, as well as academic and community partnerships to support children in their journey as life-long learners.
The Infant and Toddler Center is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to Early Childhood Education. We believe that children, from the beginning of their lives, bring their own personalities, wishes, preferences, and curiosities to each experience. Therefore, each child’s interests are honored and integrated into the curriculum.
The Infant and Toddler Center specializes in meeting the needs of our youngest learners in a nurturing environment, where they are introduced to many different forms of play and media to broaden their understanding of the world around them. Children are encouraged to interact with their environment and with each other in a way that works to satisfy their curiosities. More than in a typical childcare setting, our specially trained teachers provide an emergent curriculum that focuses in on all areas of development, including feeding, napping, toilet training, rolling, crawling, walking, running, dancing, climbing, painting, pretending, block building, singing, socialization, communicating, and enjoying, just to name a few. Children are empowered to try out new things on a daily basis as they progress through developmental stages during this time of incredible growth in their lives. Our teachers are eager to support the process and to share the victories of each child with their family as they reach those milestones. In addition to what happens in the classroom, the classes receive music and art on a weekly basis.
