After a successful launch during our 2020-2021 school year, our Lower School (Kindergarten-4th grade) student affinity group, the Williamsburg Owls of Color (WOOC - students are affectionately called “Wooc-ies”) will continue for its second year. We are also excited to be launching our student affinity group for Middle School (grades 5-8) students of color this year as well!
An affinity group is a gathering of individuals around a shared interest, identity, shared values, or a common goal. Members can belong to an affinity group formally or informally, and always in a voluntary manner.
In Affinity groups at Northside, students of color from Kindergarten to 4th grade, and from 5th grade to 8th grade meet once a month in order to foster a sense of belonging, joy, and pride in being a student of color at Williamsburg Northside. Activities and conversations will be geared toward relationship building, positive identity development, and being a change-maker in school and in the world. Students will also have a safe space to talk about their experiences as students of color in supportive and age appropriate ways with faculty facilitators present to lead and guide.
