We are happy to introduce our 3rd Grade Teacher, Jessica Contreras! Jessica is a native New Yorker, has lived in Queens, the Bronx, and now Brooklyn for the past ten years. As a life-long resident, she has a great passion for our incredibly diverse and vibrant city. She looks to our city as a resource as students become immersed in their study of the world’s various cultures. At the same time, Jessica loves exploring the outdoors and spending time in nature, from summers in Guatemala to hiking in the Catskills. She brings this interest into the classroom, always looking for opportunities to visit parks and natural areas in our area so that our “city kids” can learn about plants, animals and the environment first-hand.
Jessica holds a Masters in Childhood Education from Hunter College, and taught at Friends Seminary and Claremont Preparatory School prior to joining the Northside family. As a teacher, Jessica gets to know each child and their family on a personal level, and works tirelessly to teach her students the values of respect and cooperation as a community. In this way, she both honors the individual strengths and talents of her students while helping them to take risks, trust one another and participate fully in the collaborative life of the classroom.
