In addition to individual libraries in each classroom, the Williamsburg Northside Schools Library serves a multifaceted role: a joyful place to seek, find, and enjoy reading material, as well as a place of study, and place of learning. Students enjoy cherished books, explore new authors, and seek information on topics of all kinds. Using the WNS Library collection, students learn how to evaluate, interpret and build skills that serve them throughout their school careers.
Beyond literature, the Library is our school’s gateway to information and knowledge for both students and faculty. As a Reggio Emilia inspired school, the Library curriculum and collection adapts and expands to both complement classroom learning and follow the interests of our students.
The main Library is located at the Lower School. The space is designed for maximum flexibility to meet the needs of our evolving community and features both workspaces for younger and older students plus cozy reading areas for children and adults to share. The Library also proudly houses a floor-to-ceiling tile mosaic installation from Tessera Mosaics designed and created by our students.
We also maintain dedicated browsing collections at the Preschool and Infant and Toddler Center. These collections are freely used and shared by classrooms. ITC and Preschool faculty also use the main Library and consult with the Librarian to support project work.
Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd Grade students attend weekly library classes, enhancing their love of literature and information learning skills. Students check out one book weekly and return it the following week.
3rd Grade through 5th Grade students have two library classes weekly: one emphasizing literature and research skills and the other emphasizing technology or project work integration. Students check out books weekly.
The Librarian is available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Parents or caregivers are welcome to visit the Library with their children on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3-4.
ITC and Preschool students participate in Library Buddy Visits, sharing read-alouds and Library information with Lower School students.
