Williamsburg Northside Schools is comprised of three engaging divisions serving students ages 3 months through 11 years old. The Infant & Toddler Center (3 mos.- 2 years), The Preschool (2- 4 years), and The Lower School (Prekindergarten- 5th Grade). In the fall of 2018 we will expand to serve students through 14 years old as the middle school division opens at our 299 North 7th Street location.

About WNS

Founded in 1999 as a progressive preschool, Williamsburg Northside Schools (WNS) today offers three distinct programs in the culturally dynamic and diverse Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. Programs are provided for infants and toddlers, preschoolers, and Lower School students through the fifth grade. In the last year, WNS has made two exciting announcements. First, the school plans to add a Middle School, beginning with the introduction of sixth grade in the fall of 2018. Second, the school has recently appointed a new Head of School, Elizabeth “Elie” Déu.

Williamsburg Northside operates under the MetSchools umbrella, a network of private schools in New York City.

The Position

WNS is seeking a Director of Teaching and Learning to report to the Head of School and oversee the design, development, review, and growth of the school’s Prekindergarten to eventual 8th Grade curriculum. The Director should encourage, model, and support collaboration, innovation, and adoption of best practices for teaching in a project- based model. She or he will work in the first year to lead the Lower School team of teachers to employ pedagogical practices that will meet learning objectives across all academic subjects. The Director will also work with the Director of Middle School Planning on all necessary preparations for the launch of the 6th Grade in September 2018. The Middle School will expand to an 8th Grade in September 2020.

Start Date – July 5th

Duties

  • Ensures a challenging and flexible curriculum that is supported by creative and responsive teaching and result-oriented learning environments.
  • Organizes effective weekly faculty meeting and ongoing professional development.
  • Implements responsive learning and assessments that use data, benchmarks, and observation to monitor every student’s progress.
  • Coordinates all matters pertaining to situations of academic enrichment and/or difficulty.
  • Assures uniformity in assessment, parent reporting, and academic standards.
  • Supports the admissions team with regular parent presentations.
  • Attends and participates in administrative, faculty, student support, and other relevant meetings.
  • Assists Head of School with ongoing Middle States accreditation.
  • Assists Head of School in hiring.
  • Reviews Admissions files (when necessary).

 

Knowledge and Skills

  • Understands, applies, and shares current educational research, theory and practice in pedagogy, assessment, and reporting in Prekindergarten to 8th grade.
  • Proven implementation of project-based learning.
  • Demonstrates and shares the importance of emotional intelligence and empathy in building trust and a positive learning atmosphere across the school community.
  • Defines challenges clearly and seeks positive solutions, often in collaboration with others.

 

Qualifications

  • Must possess a relevant Masters Degree and a minimum of 8 years teaching experience, preferably across the Pre-kindergarten to 8th Grade spectrum.
  • Candidates must be able to work on a 12-month schedule vs. 10-month faculty schedule.

School Nurse for Nursery- 5th Grade

This position aims to meet the physical needs of students by promoting and providing healthy practices for students and families in our 3 divisions.
